Portoferraio and surroundings
Portoferraio is the main port of the Island of Elba, but not only! Capital since the time of Napoleon Bonaparte, founded in 1548 by Cosimo de Medici, it has preserved natural and cultural treasures for centuries. We highly recommend for your stay in Portoferraio and surroundings (you can get there easily by bike, scooter & car) the following highlights:
- old town of Portoferraio: Forte Falcone, Teatro dei Vigilanti, Villa dei Mulini, Chiesetta della Misericordia and Forte Stella;
- promenade and port of Portoferraio (our office is located at the harbour opposite pier 6);
- the white pebble beaches of Portoferraio nearby the crystal clear such as: Ghiaie, Capobianco, Seccione, Sansone.
The west coast
We strongly advise you to visit the western coast of the Island of Elba with our vehicles. A breathtaking panorama awaits you on the coastal road from Procchio to Marciana Marina. During the journey you will be able to see Corsica, Pianosa, Montecristo and the Island of Giglio. By car it will take your about two hours to travel the western ring (+/- 60 km). Allow 3 more hours for the stops (not considering the cable car to the top of our Monte Capanne).
It will be an unforgettable experience with incredible landscapes to admire. Here are the most important places you should not miss:
- Isolina della Paolina (shortly after Procchio);
- Marciana Marina;
- Marciana Alta and Poggio;
- Monte Capanne (if the day is clear go up by cable car);
- Sant’Andrea;
- Chiessi;
- Fetovaia;
- Seccheto;
- Cavoli;
- Marina di Campo (our office is next to the Camping Ville degli Ulivi).
Eastern side
The eastern side of the island, also called the shining coast, is characterized by the presence of the former iron mines. You will love this part of the Island with its beautiful beaches and historic landmarks. We start our tour from the beautiful beach of Lacona. After a sunbath we go on to the village of Capoliveri and then arrive at the localities of Porto Azzurro and Rio Marina. Afterwards we return via the fortress of Volterraio to Portoferraio. The best places of the eastern slope are:
- Lacona, a wonderful beach of fine white sand with a crystal clear sea (our office is at the entrance of the beach);
- passing by the panoramic road towards Capoliveri you arrive at Lido di Capoliveri where there is another TWN Rent office (near Camping Europa, Camping Lido and Camping le Calanchiole);
- Zuccale beach;
- Capoliveri;
- Costa dei Gabbiani (fabulous for mountain biking);
- Porto Azzurro;
- Rio Marina;
- Rio nell’Elba;
- Fortress of Volterraio;
- Villa Romana delle Grotte:
- Portoferraio.
